Charity or Social Service Business? The Road to Sustainability

Session P08

Does your nonprofit want to become more sustainable and less reliant on traditional funding? Many nonprofits are embracing the concept of social enterprise, or earned income, to build their capacity. Launching a successful social enterprise requires an investment in learning how to move from 'charity-think' to becoming a sustainable social service business. This workshop will provide hands-on experience with the seven keys to launching a successful social enterprise venture. You'll begin by evaluating your own nonprofit and 'practice' on a simulated organization, taking it through market research and feasibility to launch its earned income venture. The workshop will be fast-paced and taught by Jean Block, managing partner in Social Enterprise Ventures, LLC, an experienced trainer who has led many US organizations through training to develop social enterprise ventures. Jean Block Fund Development

Changes in Nonprofit Corporate Governance

Session P09

The IRS has now actively involved itself in the area of nonprofit governance. As a result, it is imperative that nonprofit leaders take an active role in reviewing, restructuring if necessary, and implementing a corporate governance structure that will allow their organization to thrive in this new environment. We will discuss such issues as:
  • What do you, as a leader need to know in order to make the correct decisions for your organization?
  • What policies does your organization need to adopt or update? What should be included in these policies? How will each policy be implemented?
  • Are there any issues with how you are currently organized that might trigger an IRS audit?
  • Will your organization's answers to the new Form 990 impact the charitable giving to your organization?
Lisa Runquist Governance
