The Form 990 is the IRS filing required of most nonprofits. It has been significantly amended. In addition to the "core" portion that must be filled out by all organizations, there are now numerous schedules that may be required, depending on the organization and operation of the particular nonprofit. It should be noted that the instructions have only recently been issued in final form. The new form will be required for large organizations beginning this year (reporting for 2008, filed in 2009), with a phase-in for most nonprofits over the next two years.
Because of the significant changes and the increased complexity, any organization that does not know what is required by the new form might find itself either without the information needed to complete it, or in a position where its answers might be found by potential contributors as well as the IRS itself, to have an adverse impact on the organization. Fundraising is becoming more and more crucial for nonprofits whose funding is shrinking, whose boards are ineffective or just worn out. Volunteers can often fill the gap for organization that are short-staffed, have tapped out their board members, or need to find new funding streams. One of the best ways to assure that your organization’s development plan will be implemented is to have an effective Development Committee. This committee, when successful, can lead and inspire the Board to raise money they never dreamed possible. This webinar will discuss who should serve on the Development Committee, what the committee’s role is, and how to recruit the right people to serve on the Development Committee. More Info |

For many years, grantmakers have chosen to support projects and programs with measurable outcomes, leaving nonprofits with the challenge of finding other sources of funds for business operations and growth. Many grantmakers are now realizing that this concentration on programs has prevented nonprofits from being health, growing businesses. The grantmakers response is the "capacity building" grant. With the revision of the IRS 990 form beginning in tax year 2008, massive regulation has again descended on the nonprofit community. Overlooked by much of the nonprofit community has been the long-standing requirement that an organization must register in forty states and the District of Columbia if it solicits their residents for contributions. This session is for any nonprofit that seeks to assume this legal and administrative responsibility and do it themselves. More Info |

In a perfect world, wealthy donors would find out about your cause and then mail you a check. You'd never have to leave your office! Oh wait, you probably wouldn't have a job either.... In the real world, contributors of all dollar amounts like to be "courted." They want you to develop a relationship with them before you ask for a gift. But how do you manage the cultivation process? What are creative ways to get potential donors involved with your cause? How do you explain to your boss that cultivation activities are important when he or she is asking, "Show me the money"? This session will help you exceed your fundraising goals by helping you diversify cultivation techniques to meet the desires of your donor, identify cultivation "roadblocks" and how to break through them, and develop ways to emphasize the importance of donor cultivation with management and boards. An organization’s Board can be its best asset or its most significant challenge. With the current economic challenges, the demand for charitable dollars as well as public concerns about how nonprofit organizations sometimes appear to operate, excellence in governance is critical for all charities. Careful planning and a systematic approach are essential in finding the right people for the job. Targeted cultivation and recruitment of Board members will determine how effective your organization will be in fulfilling its mission now and in the future.
This session will investigate what defines a successful Board, and its advocacy for the charity in its community. Is your Board increasing your visibility? Bringing in increased donor dollars? Enhancing viability? Engaging more volunteer support? Does every Board member consistently make his/her own annual gift? Contribute leadership to the organization? Are there internal challenges in managing some of the Board members? Do you know for sure that all compliance requirements are addressed? In this session, all of these subjects, and more, will be discussed. More Info |
