For many years, grantmakers have chosen to support projects and programs with measurable outcomes, leaving nonprofits with the challenge of finding other sources of funds for business operations and growth. Many grantmakers are now realizing that this concentration on programs has prevented nonprofits from being health, growing businesses. The grantmakers response is the "capacity building" grant. As truly successful grantseeking organizations know, effective grantsmanship is much more than knowing how to fill in the blanks on a grant application. At its best, the practice of grantsmanship serves as a powerful catalyst for positive change in the community -- for turning good ideas into something real, valuable and tangible in the world. And at its best, it all starts with mission -- a deeply held, common understanding of who your organization is in the world, what is your unique contribution, and why your work is important. A federal program officer was speaking for many 21st-century grantmakers when he said a few years ago: "Whether we require partnership or not, the truth is, if your proposal ain't collaborative, it ain't gonna be competitive!" In this thought-provoking, down-to-reality session, we'll take a close look at what "collaboration" means in the community -- and how you can make it work for you. More Info |

No other part of the grant proposal is as important as the "issue statement" -- sometimes called the statement of need or opportunity. The question is: "What is the specific need, issue or opportunity in the community that your proposal addresses?" And how you answer the question -- the issue statement -- is like the engine that drives the rest of the proposal forward. With a weak or ineffective or unclear issue statement, the entire proposal stalls out and ends up going nowhere. One that is strong, clear, compelling and speaks to the human heart, on the other hand, will drive your proposals forward and position your project for success. More Info |

In the end, it's all about evaluation: What is it you're setting out to do, create or change with your grant-funded program? And how will you know that you've succeeded? For many grant professionals -- even those who've been practicing a long time -- the whole arena of measuring success is a mystery. What's the difference between "outcomes" and "objectives"? How do you establish quantifiable measures for intangibles like changes in attitudes, behaviors, beliefs? Yet the mystery disappears when we understand, first, what it is that funders are looking for from our evaluation plans, and, second, how our evaluation plans support the successful management of our grant-funded programs. This session will help remove the mystery. Taking a common-sense, down-to-earth approach, we'll present the must-have tools and must-do techniques for constructing a solid evaluation plan for your program -- and integrating it into your funding proposals. In this interactive, hands-on session you'll explore these topics and much more. More Info |

At the heart of every mission-driven grant proposal stands a mission-driven budget. A good budget provides an honest, complete and clear picture of the total value of all the resources necessary to perform the proposed work. It also stands as an invaluable management and evaluation tool when it comes to running the grant-funded program. More Info |
